Virtual Reality Research ProjectsMost of the current research of the IMS virtual reality group is focused on the augmented reality system Studierstube. Augmented reality provides a new natural way of interacting with the computer by inserting computer graphics into a user‘s perception of the world. The Studierstube system brings together innovations from a variety of fields, including visualization, tracking and user interface techniques as well as distributed and mobile computing. VisualizationAugmented reality essentially is a new visualization technique that blends the real and the virtual for superior context dependent presentation of computer-generated information. Both new graphical rendering methods for seamless integration of real and virtual with high fidelity, and new information visualization techniques that make the computer-generated information effective, are required. TrackingA necessary prerequisite for augmented reality is real-time tracking of human users and artifacts in the environment. Quality and performance requirements for augmented reality tracking are very severe. Mobile augmented reality systems increase these requirements by providing limited hardware resources and little control over the environment. Significant improvements are required for satisfactory application performance. Distributed SystemsCollaborative work in a shared augmented reality workspace, and interaction with many graphical and non-graphical devices in a mobile computing scenario requires that the underlying software system executes on a distributed cluster of computers. New distributed system techniques are required to provide the necessary synchronisation and data sharing facilities for the implementation of augmented reality groupware. Mobile ComputingAugmented reality and mobile computing are a natural match, since the combination allows information to be presented anytime and everywhere. However, mobile computing devices are still in their infancy, and augmented reality is a very demanding technology that is difficult to implement with devices of limited capacity. Yet we are trying to implement tomorrow‘s user interfaces despite relying on today‘s technology. User InterfacesOperation of augmented reality applications is not possible with standard screen-and-mouse techniques. Actually, augmented reality is a new user interface metaphor that requires an entirely new user interface tool set. It is our goal to design and develop this tool set together with the applications that use it. ApplicationsWe are working in a number of application areas to verify the power and usability of our augmented reality system. Examples include navigation, mathematics and history education, medical visualization, and digital storytelling. |
