3D Interaction Technique Authoring utilizing VITAL (Virtual Environment Interaction Technique Abstraction Layer)

By Mathis Csisinko

Abstract

VITAL is a framework targeted on 3D interaction technique (3DIT) authors. Its open architecture promotes creation of 3DIT implementations which are portable and decoupled from application code. The design process utilizes key concepts including data flow networks, state machines and component synthesis. We give a short overview of the underlying concepts and provide details of the authoring process. In examples we illustrate how VITAL coexists with VR frameworks and describe the interfacing mechanism. Therefore, we present how portable 3DIT implementations targeted on three different VR platforms are created.
