The immense daily growth of publicly available photos requires efficient approaches for the mining of large photo collections. A significant part of shared content depicts a variety of social event types such as music concerts, street festivals, sport events, exhibitions, conferences, protests, etc. A crucial challenge in the context of automated media analysis and retrieval represents the reliability of both content-based (visual) information and provided metadata. Since different events may share common visual characteristics, visual content alone is not sufficient for a reliable event mining approach. Additionally, provided metadata (user-generated descriptions and technical data such as capture time and geo-location) may be strongly misleading due to ambiguous descriptions, missing information, camera malfunction, and varying camera settings (e.g. due to time differences in users' country of origin). In the MediaEval Multimedia Benchmark 2014 the ATU team addressed different aspects in the context of social events mining in various photo collections. First, we considered the task of aligning image galleries provided by different users where the available temporal information is incorrect (MediaEval 2014 SEM: Synchronization of Multi-User Event Media, http://www.multimediaeval.org/mediaeval2014/sem2014/). Second, we dealt with the detection and retrieval of social events from a large collection of Flickr images (MediaEval 2014 SED: Social Event Detection). In both challenges the ATU team obtained best scores among all participating teams. For more information on the MediaEval 2014 workshop and for the benchmark proceedings see http://www.multimediaeval.org/mediaeval2014/.

MediaEval (http://www.multimediaeval.org) is a community-driven benchmarking initiative for the development and evaluation of new approaches for multimedia analysis, access, and retrieval. It focuses on human and social aspects in multimedia tasks and fosters the development of algorithms that account for the various modalities of publicly available information such as visual content, audio, speech, metadata, user, and context.
