MediCubes: Design of a Health Monitoring Toy for Children

Lab project in the area of Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Keywords: Health monitoring, home monitoring, pervasive healthcare, storytelling toy, children, Tangible User Interface, sensors..

About this Project

Especially for children monitoring their health can result in a stressful situation, even when conducted at home by their parents. Current advances in sensing technology provide small non-invasive sensors with reasonable accuracy. Building upon the ACTO prototyping platform (, we investigate the possibility to integrate sensors for temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, lung capacity and skin conductance into toys. Employing these toys in a storytelling game permits health parameters to be monitored in an unperceived way while playing. This approach could significantly alleviate home health monitoring for children.
